Community Projects

UNIMAS drives local action in empowering communities by mobilizing funding support from multiple sources and harnessing expertise across its faculties. This integrated approach ensures that programs are not only financially sustainable but also rich in co-creation of knowledge, impactful innovation and relevance to community needs.

The University Sustainability Centre (USC) plays a central role in this mission by actively engaging with diverse stakeholders through pentahelix collaboration, bringing together academia, government, industry and civil society towards environmental sustainability. This approach fosters inclusive partnerships where every sector contributes expertise, resources and perspectives toward shared goals of sustainability and community well-being.

Through such strategic collaboration, USC is able to co-create solutions that strengthen livelihoods, enhance education and protect the environment. High-quality programs are designed to align with national development priorities, global sustainability frameworks and the aspirations of local communities. These initiatives serve as living laboratories of change, where academic knowledge is translated into practical solutions, ensuring long-term impact for both society and the environment.

kg-angkat

One of USC’s flagship initiatives is the Kampung Angkat MADANI program, which adopts selected villages as living laboratories for sustainable development. Currently, Kg. Semera, Sadong Jaya has been designated as UNIMAS’s Kampung Angkat MADANI. Through this initiative, USC collaborates with the local community to co-create solutions that strengthen livelihoods, improve education, conserve the environment, and preserve cultural heritage—aligning with national development agendas and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Kg. Semera was selected in line with the government’s aspiration to focus on upgrading basic facilities in rural areas that require special attention, particularly in ensuring community well-being and inclusive development. The selection concept also considers the home villages of heads of government agencies at ministries and departments nationwide, as guided by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia.

According to UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Ahmad Hata Rasit, this approach encourages closer and more meaningful involvement of agency leaders in the development of their home communities. The designation of Kg. Semera carries even deeper significance, as it is also the birthplace of the Vice Chancellor himself - adding a symbolic dimension to UNIMAS’s commitment to give back to the roots where knowledge, values, and aspirations originate.

With a population of 4,660 people across 935 households, the community of Kg. Semera is diverse and vibrant. Residents are actively engaged in economic activities such as fisheries, agriculture, public and private sector employment, self-employment, and retirement livelihoods. This dynamism positions Kg. Semera as a community with strong potential that deserves sustainable development interventions.

The program is supported by strong collaboration with local authorities including the Resident’s Office of Samarahan Division, Asajaya District Office, and Sadong Jaya Sub-District Office, ensuring effective coordination and active community participation.

Beyond infrastructure and economic empowerment, UNIMAS has also partnered with technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions such as ADTEC (Department of Human Resources, Kota Samarahan Campus) and Jabatan Kemajuan Masyarakat (KEMAS) to upgrade KEMAS kindergartens in Kg. Semera into STREAM-based preschools (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics). This initiative not only enhances early childhood education in rural areas but also nurtures interest in science and technology from a young age, while embedding religious and cultural values.

Through these multi-faceted efforts, Kg. Semera is envisioned to become a model community for sustainable rural transformation demonstrating how university-community partnerships can deliver long-term impact at the grassroots level.

Sekolah Angkat MADANI: SMK Kota Samarahan

As part of its commitment to advancing inclusive education and youth empowerment, UNIMAS has adopted SMK Kota Samarahan under the Sekolah Angkat MADANI initiative. This program reflects the government’s aspiration to uplift schools that require targeted support in terms of infrastructure, student development, and holistic learning environments.

Through this collaboration, UNIMAS works closely with the school community to introduce innovative teaching and learning approaches, promote sustainability values, and strengthen student competencies in science, technology, arts, and community leadership. Special focus is given to creating opportunities that inspire students to pursue higher education, embrace digital learning, and develop critical 21st-century skills.

A core pillar of this initiative is digital literacy - ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to navigate an increasingly technology-driven world. UNIMAS introduces programs that enhance students’ abilities in ICT skills and responsible use of online platforms. These initiatives also include training sessions for teachers to integrate digital tools into classroom instruction, bridging the gap between conventional teaching methods and modern, technology-enabled learning.

Initiatives under this effort include:

  • Supply of Smart TVs for digital transformation in teaching and learning.
  • STEM Programs to nurture creativity, problem-solving, and innovation.

  • Digital Skills Training for teachers and students to integrate ICT effectively.

  • Leadership and Higher Learning Pathways to encourage further studies and future career readiness.

  • Anti-Bullying Campaigns to build a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.

The partnership also emphasizes community-school-university linkages, ensuring that parents, local stakeholders, and university experts collectively contribute to the well-being and success of the students. By leveraging UNIMAS’s expertise across various faculties, SMK Kota Samarahan is envisioned to become a model for holistic educational transformation, aligning with the principles of MADANI and the national Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
